La Pirogue: Why Guests Keep Coming Back
30 June 2026
For many guests, La Pirogue is more than a hotel. It feels like a second home.
Since it opened, travellers from around the world have formed a deep bond with La Pirogue. Some have returned every year for decades, drawn back by the feeling that here, some things stay beautifully the same.
Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, La Pirogue still has the power to inspire wonder. Over the past half-century, La Pirogue has become an icon of Mauritian hospitality and a place filled with stories, friendships and moments guests carry with them. For many, that sense of belonging has only deepened with each stay.
A matter of the heart

These loyal guests no longer come simply for a holiday. They return for the atmosphere, the familiar faces, sometimes even the very same bungalow. And then there is that feeling, difficult to describe, that greets them from the moment they arrive: the sense of being expected.
Sylvia Meyer is one of them. Originally from a small village in Switzerland, she has stayed at La Pirogue every year for more than 30 years. “La Pirogue… is a matter of the heart. I love La Pirogue, I love the team, I love the whole atmosphere here. It is unique,” she says.
In 1994, she discovered the hotel almost by chance, following the recommendation of a friend working in a travel agency. At the time, she was mainly looking to escape everyday life. “I used to spend my holidays in Switzerland, but the office kept calling me. I told myself I needed to go somewhere very far away,” she recalls with a smile.
“The Hotel of Smiles”

What struck Sylvia from her very first stay was the kindness of the staff.
“Everyone went out of their way to help me. I thought: why not come back? Today, it feels like my second family. When I come here, it feels as though I’m coming home.”
That same warmth also left a lasting impression on Nick Bristow, a regular guest since 2012. For Nick, La Pirogue is “the Hotel of Smiles”, as he likes to call it.
“People are happy in their work, smiling and just here to make your stay special, and they certainly do that. Nothing here feels forced.”
Lucile Douaud shares the same sentiment: “People always have a thoughtful little gesture for us. They know our habits too, and they take the time to ask how we are doing.” Since her very first stay in 2019, friendships have formed with members of staff. “We stayed in touch throughout the year on WhatsApp just to check in on one another.”
To understand this spirit, meet Radhay Balmick, Chief Steward, who joined the hotel team in 1990. “La Pirogue is like a family, a family where thousands of people meet, get to know one another and feel good. The staff’s smiles are something all our guests love.”
Iconic bungalows

This feeling of being at home is also deeply rooted in the hotel’s distinctive architecture. Set within 14 hectares of tropical gardens, La Pirogue’s bungalows are part of its story. Their thatched roofs echo the shape of traditional Mauritian fishing boats, giving the resort its unmistakable silhouette. All facing the sea, they offer an atmosphere of intimacy and tranquillity. Over the years, they have retained both their authenticity and their soul.
It is precisely these bungalows, and the views they offer, that bring Karin and Manfred Beckmann back from Germany every year. They first stayed at the hotel in 1976, just a few months after it opened. And despite the passing years, some traditions remain unchanged, including always booking the very same bungalow.
Immersed in nature

The hotel is inseparable from its gardens, its 1,800 coconut trees, and the birdsong that accompanies every stroll.
“The one thing that stuck with me was being surrounded by nature and the really lush gardens that are very mature. It’s the 50th year this year, so you can tell that the gardens have been here a long time,” says Andy Sockalingum. This British guest of Mauritian origin often travels from Denmark, where he lives, to recharge at the hotel.

So why do people return to La Pirogue? For the beauty of the place, yes. For the bungalows tucked into tropical gardens. For the ocean just beyond. But most of all, they return for the people, the familiar smiles and that rare feeling of being welcomed back with heart.
