Mallet Magic: 2025 Sugar Beach International Croquet Cup Recap
28 April 2025
From March 31 to April 5, the manicured lawns in front of Sugar Beach’s grand manor buzzed with the sound of mallets striking balls and players deep in concentration. The 2025 Sugar Beach International Croquet Cup returned for its second edition, welcoming 24 players from seven countries — up from 16 players last year — a clear sign of the tournament’s growing international prestige.
After a week of tight matches and tactical play, it was New Zealand’s Jenny Clarke who once again rose to the top. A seasoned competitor with world titles across New Zealand, Australia, and the UK, Clarke defended her title in a hard-fought final against Ireland’s Jane Morrison — adding another milestone to an already storied career.
But the real story of the Cup wasn’t just about individual victories. It was about how croquet is taking root in Mauritius in exciting new ways.
“This event is about creating something special in Mauritius,” said Duncan Catterall, co-organiser and founder of Croquet and Cocktails, the events company behind the scenes.
“It’s not just about competition — it’s the setting, the vibe, the people. Croquet is one of the few sports where men and women compete equally. That inclusivity is at the heart of what we’re building here.”
Local player Jérémie de Gersigny, captain of the Mauritian team, sees even more potential:
“For many of us, croquet is more than a hobby — it’s a tradition, and yes, a passion. It’s fun, but also incredibly strategic. It’s like playing chess with mallets.”
The week wrapped up with a prize-giving ceremony attended by Junior Minister Eileen Karen Lee Chin Foo Kune-Bacha, celebrating not just the champions but the growing community around the sport.
During a major announcement, Joelle Edwards-Tonks, Chief Commercial and Operations Officer at Sunlife, introduced plans for a new Junior Croquet Academy:
“This academy will give young Mauritians the opportunity to discover croquet and compete in friendly tournaments — all within the beautiful setting of Sugar Beach.”
With the 2026 Sugar Beach International Croquet Cup already confirmed for March 15–20, and a junior competition on the horizon, croquet’s future in Mauritius is only just beginning.
